Mossel Bay
Protected from the prevailing swell and diveable year-round, Mossel Bay holds some of the warmest, most forgiving water on the southern Cape coast — and some of its richest reef life.
Forming the western edge of Santos Beach, this shallow garden of feather worms, sea fans and redbait is where most of our students take their first ocean breaths. Octopus hide in the cracks and shoals of blacktail drift overhead.
A short ride on African Waters brings you to banks of sea grass and orange wall sponges that grow up to three metres long. Big, confident red roman patrol the reef and often come in close to inspect divers.
The bay's signature advanced dive. Dramatic drop-offs fall from three to twenty metres through caves and gullies that hold large fish, catsharks and the occasional inquisitive seal. A check-out dive in the bay is required first.
A superb deep reef for divers who love the small stuff. The macro life here rewards a slow pace and a good torch — basket stars, nudibranchs and a kaleidoscope of encrusting sponges.
